How it actually works

Everything a first visit throws at you, in the order you meet it.

Macau's saunas and spas are licensed venues, listed with the tourism authority, and most run through the night. They are not a massage shop with a room at the back: it is a building with a wet area, a lounge, dining, guest rooms and often KTV on separate floors, and people stay for hours. Which is why the thing first-timers get wrong is rarely "which venue" — it is when to go, how the price is built, and how long to allow.

1. Seven steps, arrival to bill

  1. Check in at the desk. State how many of you and whether you booked. Walk-ins are fine except weekend nights.
  2. Shoes off, wristband on. The wristband is your tab — everything goes on it and you settle once on the way out. Lose it and there is a charge, so keep it on.
  3. Shower and soak. The wet area, steam and sauna and usually a scrub are included in the entry fee.
  4. Change into a robe and go to the lounge. This is where you choose a tier — the price list is on the wall or handed to you. Read what each tier includes.
  5. Pick a tier and go to the room. A named therapist usually costs extra, or depends on who is free that night.
  6. Back to the lounge to eat and rest. Food is normally included; some premium dishes are charged, so ask.
  7. Settle at the desk. Check the items against your wristband and confirm how the service charge was applied before paying.
A normal evening runs three to six hours. Plenty of people go in at 22:00 and leave at two or three in the morning. If you plan to stay overnight, budget the whole night.

2. The price is four layers, stacked

  • Entry (dry sauna only): shower, baths, lounge, food, no room service. Around MOP 300–600.
  • Tier fee: the list is split into tiers (standard / mid / premium). The tier sets the room grade and the length of the session. This is the main cost.
  • Extension: beyond the base time it is charged by the hour, MOP 300–800 — ask whether "one hour" means 60 minutes or 45.
  • Service charge: applied on top of the three above, and written three different ways. See below.

3. Three ways a service charge is written

WordingMeaningYou pay on a 2,000 bill
IncludedThe quoted price is final2,000
+10%10% added at settlement2,200
5% + 5%Split into two lines with different labels2,200

Those two lines of 5% + 5% are the ones worth questioning — ask what each line is for. On this list Empire and Manhao charge 5% + 5%; East Castle, Majesty and The Excellent include it; the rest add a flat 10%. One question at the desk — "what is the total at the end?" — saves the argument later.

4. Choosing a time slot

  • 13:00–19:00 (cheapest): just opened, few people, softer pricing. Good if your schedule is flexible.
  • 20:00–24:00 (busiest): the full selection and the best atmosphere, but rooms queue at popular venues, especially Friday and Saturday.
  • 00:00–06:00 (late): the crowd thins and rooms free up. Watch the closing times — the earliest shuts at 03:00 (The Excellent), the latest at 07:00 (Empire).

Opening times differ more than people expect: The Excellent opens at 12:00, East Castle at 14:00, Clube Rio at 16:00. Turning up at three in the afternoon to a venue that opens at four is a wasted trip.

5. Peninsula or Cotai

Eight of the ten are on the Macau Peninsula (NAPE, Dynasty and the old district), two in Taipa (Shang Pin, Manhao). From a Cotai strip hotel those two are minutes away; from a Peninsula hotel, five minutes by car. Our transfers cover both, so pick the venue you want rather than the one nearest your hotel.

6. Staying overnight

Eight allow it. Overnight is usually either a flat fee for a lounge recliner — cheaper but noisy — or an extension charged against a room, which costs more but is quiet. After three in the morning the lounge fills up, so claim a spot early or take the room.

7. Getting there

  • Border Gate, HZMB port, Outer Harbour ferry terminal and Taipa ferry terminal are all 10–20 minutes away.
  • Taxi fares rise after midnight, and getting one from Cotai back to the Peninsula late can be a wait.
  • Book through us and a free transfer is included both ways — just give the pickup point and time.

8. Six things to know the first time

  1. Bring ID. Some venues register guests, and nobody under 18 is admitted.
  2. Read the price list before committing, and ask about anything you do not understand. Nobody minds.
  3. Keep the wristband on. Everything is charged to it.
  4. Tipping is optional — give something if the service was good, and nothing happens if you do not.
  5. Weekends and trade-fair weeks (jewellery show, Grand Prix) lift both prices and crowds. Avoid if you can.
  6. Do not take photos inside. It is the one rule everyone follows.

9. Three misconceptions

  • "Expensive must be better." Clube Rio at 2,888 is a package product; Empire at 1,199 has theme rooms. It depends what you came for.
  • "One venue, one price." The same venue varies by time slot, tier and whatever promotion is running — up to 30%.
  • "You can haggle." The desk price is the desk price. Booking through a channel with an allocation is where the discount is, which is the whole reason we exist.
Still have a question? Tell us the group size, time and budget, and we will name the two venues that fit and what they cost on the night.

Which one tonight? Just ask.

Tell us how many people, what time, and a rough budget. We come back with the real price (service charge included), what is available tonight, and a free transfer from your hotel.
